Latest News: How JTF Fought Boko Haram for 20 hours in Maiduguri

Please read full story of how JTF Fought Boko Haram for 20 hours in Maiduguri, Nigeria -- For over 20 hours between Tuesday and yesterday, there was a gun battle in Maiduguri between the Joint Task Force (JTF) and members of the Jama’atu Ahlil Sunnati Lidda’awati Wal Jihad, better known as Boko Haram. Daily Trust reports that the result of the gun duel was devastating because residents said there were “heavy casualties” on both sides.

Witnesses said the confrontation, which started on Tuesday with terrifying sound of eight bomb blasts, has left “unforgettable scars on the civilian population” in many settlements in the affected areas.
During the ensuing crisis, many people were reportedly killed, houses, shops and vehicles vandalized and freedom of movement curtailed.
Residents said they could only compare the incident of the last two days with what transpired in July 2009, when federal troops had days of intense battle with followers of Mohammed Yusuf, the leader of the sect, who was also killed during the crisis.
“Members of the Yusufiyya movement came out in large number, over 40 of them. They looked fearless and ready to die. They launched the first assault on JTF operatives around 4.30pm at Lawan Bukar area on Tuesday,” a witness in the area, who saw how the trouble started, said.

UK Female Prison Officer: Jailed For Having Illicit Affairs with Four prisoners

A UK female prison officer who admitted swapping erotic letters and phone calls with four serving convicts was jailed for 12 months yesterday.
Zanib Khan, 27, made more than ten hours of amorous calls to drug dealers and robbers.
One prison inmate said he could not forget ‘walking through those gates and seeing my beautiful gal’.

Another referred to kissing her ‘beautiful lips and body’ and spoke about how he wanted to see the petite warder’s ‘size 2 feet’ in the air as they made love.
The letters, smuggled out of her workplace, HMP Brixton, were later found in her bedroom at her parents’ home.
After the arrest it emerged she had previously been disciplined for failing to disclose her father was serving a four-year sentence for immigration offences, and that her boyfriend was inside for robbery.
Although Khan only admitted misconduct with four prisoners, police suspect she was conducting relationships with a further three inmates.
Her defence counsel insisted that though the letters contained ‘sexual matters’, it was all fantasy.
Robin Du Preez, prosecuting, said between March and November 2011: ‘Miss Khan developed an inappropriate intimate relationship with serving prisoners on A Wing at HMP Brixton.

Ex-Bayelsa State Governor (Timiprie Sylva) to be Remanded In EFCC Custody

The Abuja Federal High court, on sitting today (Tuesday June 5th) ordered that the Ex-Bayelsa State governor (Timiprie Sylva) be remanded in EFCC custody.

Timiprie Sylva will remain in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) custody until Thursday 7 June when the court will decide on his bail application.

Mr Sylva who voluntarily appeared in court even with speculations that he is outside the country is standing trial for alleged corruption and conversion of N6.5 billion belonging to Bayelsa State for personal use.

The former governor took a not guilty plea to the six count corruption charges read to him by the Clark of the court.

He there after asked for bail through his counsel Lateef Fagbemi who told the court that the charges against Mr Sylva are offences that will allow the defendant bail until his guilt or otherwise is proven.

He asked the court to take notice that the accused appeared in the court voluntarily and will continue to do so.

Mr Fagbemi added that the court should also be lenient with the conditions of bail.

Opposing the bail application, counsel to EFCC, Festus Keyamo argued that the accused had evaded service for several months and that such a person cannot be trusted to be available throughout the trial.

Mr Keyamo told the court that though the offences for which the former governor is standing trial are bail-able, it is not enough to secure bail as bail still lies at the discretion of the court.

Haven listened to the two lawyers the trial judge, Justice Adamu Bello fixed ruling for Thursday 7 June while remanding the former governor in prison custody.

However, based on the agreement between the prosecuting and defence counsels, the presiding judge change his earlier pronouncement and remanded the former governor in the EFCC custody.
