
Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko said on Monday that his government owed it a duty to the state officials that lost their lives in the last Thursday’s plane crash in Lagos to continue to work for the development of the state.
A statement by the Ondo State Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, quoted the governor as saying, “The
duty we owe the dead is to continue to work assiduously for the
development of the State. The sacrifice of the deceased will not be in
vain if we all carry on undeterred by the vicissitudes of life.”
Four officials of Ondo State, including the state Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Deji Falae, died in the Associated Airlines plane crash. The crashed plane was conveying the corpse of the late former governor of the state, Dr.Olusegun Agagu, to Akure.
Mimiko spoke at the special prayer sessions marking the end of the three days fasting and prayer declared by the government to mourn the dead state officials.
The fasting and prayer sessions ended on Monday with special prayer sessions by Christians and Muslims in the state.
At the prayer sessions, Clerics said the plane crash was a test and did not indicate that God had forsaken the state.
Chief Imams Abdulakeem Yayi Akorede, Bashir Alimi, Abbas Abubakir of Akure,Ondo and Ikare Akoko respectively, as well as Chief Imam Ahmed Aladesawe, the Chairman Ondo State League of Imams, prayed one after the other at the Islamic prayers held at the Babafunke Ajasin Auditorium, Alagbaka, for the peace of the state and an end to tragedy of all kinds.
They asked that the joy of God would replace the sorrow of the past few days for the families of the bereaved, the governor, members of the state cabinet and all the people of the state.
In the Christian service, which held at the Ondo State Cultural Centre, Adegbemile,Akure, Bishop Joshua Ketiku, Bishop Felix Adejumo, Elder Tunde Adesida, Reverend Joshua Odeyemi and Venerable Nelson Fadoju, among others, led prayers for the country, the state, families of the bereaved and government and people of Ondo State.
Mimiko thanked Ondo State indigenes and Nigerians as a whole for standing by the government during its trying times.
He said the hearts of the government and people of the state reached out to the families of the deceased and asked that God would shield, console and be with them.
