Four Nigerian footballers have been sentenced to 6 months in prison in Tanzania over illegal stay in the country, Goal reports.
The convicts, Andrew Okoro, Chika Ulugbe Odia, Chikere Messaiah and Onyenkwu Daniel, were given an option by the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam either to pay a fine (100,000/- for Okoro and Odia each and 50,000/- for Messaiah and Onyenkwu each) or to be imprisoned.
All the convicts failed to pay the fine and started serving their terms for the offence committed on May 9, 2014.
Immigration Department officer narrated that Okoro and Messaiah came to Tanzania for trials with Ashanti United, but failed to sail through and were not recruited; Odia had played for Toto African Football Club in the last season and Onyenkwu had come for trials with Coastal Union, but didn't demonstrate good performance.
