The Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, has demanded full
investigation into Thursday’s plane crash in Lagos, to establish its
remote and immediate cause, saying it was the only way of assuring
Nigerians that the country’s airspace was safe.
The Forum also prayed God to give the Ondo State Governor, Olusegun
Mimiko, the people and government of Ondo State and everyone who lost
loved ones in the crash, the fortitude to bear their losses.
The NGF stated this in a statement by its Chairman, Chibuike Amaechi, on Friday.
A
chartered aircraft belonging to Associated Aviation Limited, crashed
shortly after taking off from the local wing of the Murtala Muhammed
Airport, Ikeja, killing 13 out of the 20 passengers on board.
The
aircraft was conveying the corpse of a former Ondo State Governor,
Olusegun Agagu, to Akure, the state capital, where family members,
associates and sympathisers were already waiting to hold the burial
ceremony.
Mr. Agagu died last month in Lagos shortly after he returned from a medical trip abroad.
NGF
said Nigerians would only be assured that the country’s airspace was
safe if an investigation was conducted into the incident while anyone
found guilty of any recklessness or dereliction of duty, was brought to
book.
“We also demand a prompt and thorough investigation of this
incident as that is the only way of assuring the Nigerian people that
their airspace is safe for flying,” the forum said.
“The remote
and immediate causes of the accident should be established while anyone
found guilty of any recklessness or dereliction of duty should be
brought to book.”
While commiserating with Mr Mimiko, who is also
the vice chairman of the Jonah Jang faction of the NGF, the forum said
that the crash was not only shocking, but devastating because the
initial sudden death of Mr Agagu, was a huge tragedy in itself.
It
said, “We hereby commiserate with the government and people of Ondo
state and the families of all those who died in Thursday, October 3
Associated Airline’s crash in Lagos as the body of late Governor
Olusegun Agagu, was being conveyed for burial.
“The incident is shocking and devastating given that the initial sudden death of Mr. Agagu himself was a huge tragedy in itself.
“We
pray the Almighty God to give Governor Olusegun Mimiko, the people and
government of Ondo state and everyone who lost loved ones in the crash
the fortitude to bear their losses. May God to heal the injured and
restore them to perfect health.”
