House Of Reps To Look Into Young Nigerian Student's Death In Cyprus

Abuja - The Nigerian House of Representatives will investigate the case of the 20-year-old Nigerian student who died in Cyprus.

It will be recalled that the deceased Gabriel Soriwei, 20, a student Electrical/Electronic Engineering at the Cyprus International University, was ran over by a car in Nicosia, the Northern city in Cyprus. The accident, after which the young man lapsed into a coma, took place on July 13, 2013, and death followed on September 7, 2013.

The father of the deceased, Patrick Soriwei, spoke before the House Committee on the Diaspora in Abuja on Wednesday. The gathering was chaired by Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
Mr. Soriwei narrated that the authorities have refuse to share information about the woman (who is said to be Turkish), and also did not disclose any information regarding the investigation into incident to the family.
His late son's University, as well as the Turkish Embassy in Nigeria, also showed little to no interest in the tragedy.
Mr. Soriwei narrated how he flew to Cyprus and saw his son's life sustained by a life-support machine in a hospital. He returned to Nigeria after two weeks, as Gabriel's health seemed tobe improving. However, in the beginning of September, the family received a phonecall from the International Students' organization, and it was revealed that Gabriel died of a heart attack.
Then, representatives of the Turkish Airlines called, saying the remains of his son had been sent to Nigeria.
The boy was buried on September 20, but none of his personal belonging have found their way back yet.
The father explained that all his previous efforts to seek intervention from the authorities have turned out to be futile. He asked the committee to help to obtain justice, as there are other young Nigerians who might find themselves in a similar situation,
Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa assured him that the body would investigate the issue and get the police report on the matter.
