The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has started celebration of the Nigeria's 53d independence day by addressing the nation via its Facebook page.

"We wish to commend our leaders, past and present and indeed all Nigerians who despite decades of challenges have shown enormous resilience and determination in building a united, strong and prosperous nation over the years," reads the statement. PDP, or the part its part that now often referred to as 'old PDP' due to the split in the party, reminds in its address that during the last fourteen years, PDP "has been the fulcrum of re-birth and sustenance of Nigeria's democracy." Metuh, on, behalf of the party, expresses support to the "deep commitment and the unshakable resolve" of President Goodluck Jonathan to improve lives of Nigerians. On the eve of the national holiday, PDP has called everyone to unite and show love to one another: "As we therefore celebrate our independence anniversary, we urge all compatriots to reflect on the essence of our nationhood and remain steadfast to one united Nigeria by showing love to one another and by supporting government’s efforts in achieving the vision of our founding fathers. Happy Independence Celebrations!"
