Survivors say militants screaming "God is great!" killed at least 12 civilians and set houses on fire as they rampaged through a village in northeastern Nigeria - the area, that has already been attacked several times.
Those, who managed to survive, trekked about 100 km to Maiduguri, capital of Borno state, made known that 30 Islamic extremists with guns and explosives rode into Sandiya village on Thursday in all-terrain vehicles and on motorbikes.
Cell connection was cut by the military, thus the news about the tragedy came only on Saturday, when the villagers arrived. Reports of similar attacks in neighbouring Yobe state could not be confirmed immediately.
The area was tense on Sunday with increased military checkpoints and patrols.
Northeastern Nigeria is under a state of emergency, while the army battles an Islamic uprising that has killed thousands in four years.
