A Lagos Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ejigbo has ordered an immediate deportation of a 19-year old illegal immigrant from Cotonou in Benin Republic, residing in Lagos, western Nigeria.
The man made a shocking confession that he actually came to steal in Nigeria in order to survive.
The convict, Abdulrahaman Jafaru, told the court that he came to Lagos with his friend who is now at large over two years ago and had been stealing before he was caught.
The man was caught after he broke into a church in Akesan area of Lagos and carted away the worship equipment.He was arrested and charged before the court where he pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing under the Criminal Code.
He also revealed that he lived in an uncompleted building where he kept those items recovered from him.
According to Jafaru, he was from a poor family and had no visible means of livelihood in his country before he was asked to come to Lagos by his friend to hustle.
Jafaru, the police alleged, broke into Glorious Assembly Church located at Adexon Bus Stop Akesan and stole the church musical equipment, generators belonging to Pastor Biodun Paul and hid them in an uncompleted building.
While the church was searching for their property, he went and stole another generator belonging to Oladoun Olatunbosun in the same area.
Nemesis caught up with him when he took the generators to Alaba market for sale.
He was apprehended by the police who went to the uncompleted building and recovered the church equipment.
He confessed to the police and was charged to court where he pleaded guilty.
After presenting his case, the prosecutor, Mr. Femi Adeleye asked the court to sentence him accordingly because if he was left unpunished, he will go back and continue stealing.
The court found him guilty as charged and ordered his deportation.
