Many people were feared dead, when
about 30 gunmen stormed a local market and headed to the shops on December 18,
2013, Wednesday.
The insurgents targeted places where
businessmen deal in local and foreign currencies. Stealing from money changers
and banks is one of the ways the Boko Haram finance their insurgency.
They ransacked the shops and escaped
on foot using the road that led to a river not too far from the market.
In a text message, received by
PREMIUM TIMES on December 19, from the Commanding Officer of the Special
Operation Battalion in the town, Beyidi Martins, there was a confirmation that
soldiers on patrol had caught up with the fleeing gunmen near Digil Village,
killing 13 of them.
The Officer noted that AK47 rifles
and the stolen money were recovered as the result of operation. He further
added that the army would return to its owners.
The mentioned attack at the market
was the second assault in the year 2013. In the first attack, soldiers arrested
some gunmen and recovered a substantial amount of money from them. Local and
foreign currencies recovered from the thieves were returned to the owners.
Mubi, grappling with these and
similar attacks, had a 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew imposed on it by the military,
three weeks ago.
It would be noted that Adamawa,
Borno and Yobe are the states under the emergency rule since May 2013.
