ASUU Strike: Why Academic Activities Are Still Low at LASU

The Lagos State University (LASU) shall resume teaching activities after its Senate meets next week to design a new academic calendar, fix a schedule for students to return.
Mr. Sola Fosudo, the Acting Director, Centre for Information, LASU Press and Public Relations Unit, made this known to press in a telephone conversation on December 19, 2013, Thursday.

“Technically, the school has resumed since the ASUU strike was suspended, but the senate will be meeting to design the timetable and also choose a date for resumption.

“The decision of the Senate will be communicated to all as soon as the meeting is held,” he said.
LASU Official spoke as activities remained low in the university’s Ojo Campus, though lecturers were seen around.
However, Mr. Adekunle Idris, the Chairman of the LASU chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, said that the lecturers were set to resume teaching.
“We are waiting for the Senate to meet and amend the school timetable,” he said.
He also added that teaching was the only aspect of the lecturers’ work stopped during their more than five months strike which ended three days ago.
Mr. Adekunle Idris further urged the Federal Government not to breach its agreement with the union to prevent strikes in the future.
“The Federal Government should ensure that the agreement signed is implemented as and when due to avoid future strikes because time lost during strikes can never be regained.
“The goodwill and faith demonstrated by the signing of the agreement should be sustained,” he said.
