Former Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje says the ruling party has failed Nigerians.
In his opinion, the PDP is no longer satisfying and meeting the expectations of the people, hence the exodus of members to another party.
The official declared this speaking with journalists in Ilorin during the annual dinner of Klob 27, an Ilorin-based elite group.
Baraje, also a former National Secretary of the PDP, was chairman of the defunct new PDP which pulled out of the mainstream PDP during the October 31 convention of the party.
Some members of the group including five governors of Adamawa, Kwara, Sokoto, Kano, and Rivers state as well as 37 members of the House of Representatives have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mass defection, Baraje says, was not unexpected. The reason for it, according to him, is the failure of the PDP to give Nigerians the desired development.
"Once your aspirations and expectations are not being met which largely may be responsible as a result of difference in ideology, you don’t have a business being in any group that is adequately representing your ideology, your belief which may transcend into your aspiration.
Therefore, if the PDP is no longer satisfying the interest and aspirations of people that are there who are largely politicians, it is normal to change to go and fuse into other groups that they think their aspirations and ideologies will work, not only for themselves but for the betterment of the entire public and the population of the country. So this is exactly what has happened. The PDP has failed the people and I make bold to say that. The PDP that I know, that I was the chairman, that I was the national secretary, is no longer the PDP now."
