New Orleans Pelicans star Bryce Dejean-Jones has been shot dead after
allegedly breaking down the door of a Dallas apartment he believed
belonged to his girlfriend.
The 23-year-old NBA player died early on Saturday morning after he was shot in the abdomen.
A man who is a resident at the Camden Belmont Apartments in Dallas, Texas, told police he was sleeping when he heard someone kick down his front door shortly after 3am, Fox 4 reported.
He told police that he grabbed his gun and shot Dejean-Jones when he entered his bedroom.
Police found the basketball player in a pool of blood in an outdoor passageway. He was taken to hospital but could not be saved.
The gunman told police that he called out to the intruder, but opened fire after they did not respond.
It is legal in Texas for someone to use deadly force in order to protect themselves from intruders.
Dejean-Jones was visiting his girlfriend for his daughter's first birthday, which was Saturday, according to his agent, Scott W Nichols.
He said the girlfriend returned to the apartment first while Dejean-Jones went for a walk after they had gone out.
She lives on the fourth floor, and Dejean-Jones, who was visiting the complex for the first time, went to the third.
'He went to the wrong apartment unfortunately and I think he thought his girlfriend locked him out, so he was knocking on the door, banging on the door, it's locked,' Nichols said.
'So one thing led to another.'
'He was attempting to enter the apartment which led to him ultimately being in the wrong place at the wrong time,' Nichols said in a statement earlier on Saturday.
Sources reportedly told ESPN that Dejean-Jones had an argument with the child's mother before the shooting.
At this stage no one has been arrested and it is not clear if the man who shot Dejean-Jones will face charges.
