Crisis Looms As Gov. Amaechi Sacks Newly Re-instated Obio-Akpor Chairman, Councillors

Four days after a Port Harcourt High Court ordered the reinstatement of suspended Obio-Akpor Local Government Chairman, Timothy Nsirim and 17  councilors, the Rivers State Government has announced the dissolution of the council with effect from Nov. 28.
This was made known in a statement signed by Mr George D.N. Feyii, Secretary to the Rivers State Government,SSG.
According to the statement, the Obio-Akpor Chairman, Timothy Nsirim and the 17 councillors should vacate the office with immediate effect and hand-over all council documents to the Head of Personnel Management.
The government has ordered the management of the Council to hand over the affairs of Obio-Akpor to the Head of Personnel Management instead of a Caretaker Committee.
However, the Chairman of the council, Timothy Nsirim said he would not give up his mandate, adding that the court had ordered that nobody should interfere with Obio-Akpor Local Government Area affairs.
“What the Rivers State government is doing is contemptuous. What the Governor is supposed to do is to go to Appeal Court instead of trying to cause anarchy in this state. God forbid”, he said.
Similarly, the five anti-Amaechi Lawmakers: Evans Bipi, Kelechi Worgu, Victor Ihunwo, Michael Chinda and Martins Amaewhule in a press statement said the Governor had no right to dissolve Obio-Akpor council.
